The Kind of Beauty That Keeps You Up At Night

IN JUNE I visited From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce&Gabbana in the Miami Design District, and hours later I was still awake thinking about it, completely unable to sleep, adrenaline coursing through my veins.

As an artist, I was captivated by the extraordinary craftsmanship—intricate embroidery, handwork, storytelling, and imagination woven into every room. The exhibition felt less like a fashion show and more like a journey through Italian culture, history, and ABSOLUTE devotion to the handmade.

One room stopped me in my tracks. Dedicated to Sardegna, it instantly transported me back to 2018 when I visited the island. I remember buying earrings from a local artisan and noticing a tattoo on his arm. Curious, I asked, “Why do you have four Black men tattooed on you?” He looked at me, smiled and replied in a thick Italian accent, “It’s my culture.” I keep the flag of sardegna on my fridge to this day.

At the time, I didn’t fully understand the significance of the symbol. Standing in the exhibition years later, that memory returned with new meaning. What once seemed like a simple conversation became a reminder of how deeply people carry their history, identity, and traditions with them.

That was the magic of this exhibition. Beyond the beauty of the garments, it revealed the stories, places, and generations of artisans whose hands transform culture into art.
